The DEWALT DWFP55126 6-Gallon, 165-PSI Pancake Compressor Review
When it comes to compressed air at home there are a number of tools that will make your DIY and home improvement projects easier. The problem is which type of compressor to choose.
Pancake compressors are very popular in the home market but some models just don’t cut the mustard. Read on to find out more about the features and benefits of the Dewalt DWFP55 to see how well suited you are too each other.

What We Love
The DWPFP55 features an electric motor that makes home use so much more convenient. Firstly, the motor is oil free which means that there is no need to fiddly maintenance and periodic oil changes – just plug and go baby! It also has a low amperage motor which means that you can plug it into a home socket without worrying that every time the motor kicks in to refill the tank, the circuit breaker trips, and plungers everything into darkness.
Oh and while we’re on the subject of oil free motors, unlike most of the competition, this one runs very quietly at just 73dB so there’s no need to worry about disturbing the neighbours.
The design also means that it is a very compact device, measuring just 17 x 16 x 20 inches and as it weighs in at a mere 32 pounds it is very portable so you really can take your air supply exactly where it’s needed.
The DWFP55 is also designed so that the controls are covered by a protective flap – a neat idea that means that the two universal couplers (yes you can run two tools at once) are well protected.
What’s not to like really? Well we’ve got to be totally honest with you - there is one thing. Like most pancake compressors the main limitation of this type of compressor is the tank.
At six gallons this does place a limitation on the types of tools that the compressor will drive effectively. If you are looking to drive a spray gun or a grinder you’ll not really have much joy as the tank will be exhausted quickly and you’ll need to wait for it to recharge.
If you really want to be picky, the design of the guard that covers the motor and stops fingers getting burned when then motor heats up is rather flimsy and could perhaps be a little more robust but now we really are getting picky.
Despite the light weight you could never accuse the DWFP55 not being a lightweight! The tank provides 2.6 CFM of air at 90 PSI so most tools from nailing to wood working can be supported without lengthy refills of the tank.
Best Suited For
Definitely designed for home use, this compressor will also support light construction work as well as DIY activities. At home the 6 gallon tank is large enough to make using all but the most air hungry tools easy without having to wait for regular recharging of the tank.
Excellent all round home pankcake air compressor – portable, light and will get most of your s**t done!
Not So Great For
If you are looking for air at pressure in larger volumes then this little compressor is going to struggle to keep up with demand. You’ll almost certainly find yourself waiting for the tank to refill far more than you want to.
Steer clear if you are a demanding compressed air user – carpenters and construction workers, go for something more heavy duty, such as this compressor.
If small, light, and portable really float your boat then you and the DWP55 will be a match made in heaven. As far as pancake compressors go, this is a more than capable machine that strikes a perfect balance between portability and air capacity.
If your DIY is the sort that is fuss free then the plug in and go without oil changes will also make life straightforward so this really is a home compressor that needs to be on your shortlist.
A very solid, great performing pancake compressor, perfect for home use – light, portable and powerful (for its size) 4.6 out of 5 Stars!
