What size air compressor do I need?

A home air compressor will make your life easier for many reasons. You can use an air compressor for a wide range of tasks, from topping off your vehicle or bike’s tires, to powering up that heavy duty jackhammer. Additionally, they can also be used to inflate your sports balls, basketballs, soccer and even footballs.

With different attachments, you can quickly clear off a workspace. Others are good for air tools, and having one can reduce your work time tremendously. With all the different applications for a home air compressor, there are things you need to look for in an air compressor when you decide to add one to your home improvement arsenal.

Specific uses of the tool

Firstly, you need to think about the specific uses of your compressor. If you just want one that can inflate your tires or sports equipment, there are many good smaller sizes to choose from , and many of these have extra features like flashlights and emergency signal lights. They can be plugged into your utility socket, or cigarette lighter in your vehicle, giving you portable emergency air power where and when you need it.

Size of the tool

Air compressors come in various shapes, sizes and, pressure levels. You need to consider which is best suited to serve your purpose. Check out the specs and viability of the model to suit your need. If you need it for work, go for heavy duty and powerful model with commercial applications.

Air compressor sizes

If you wish to use it for emergencies, don't spend a fortune on a big, cumbersome, powerful compressor. Instead, go for a portable/home use model.

If you choose one of these smaller models, it is important that you look for one that is constructed of high impact plastic, with a pressure gauge built into it so you can easily see how much air pressure you are putting on your tires.

This way you don't overfill and end up popping a tire or ball. It should have long cord, at least ten feet, so that you can reach all the tires of your vehicle.

Don’t forget that the plug should be made of heavy-duty material, and have a fuse integrated into it so that if something happens, the fuse will blow before there is damage to the unit itself. You should have the ability to access this fuse quickly so that it can be replaced easily. You need to find one with a variety of different attachments, one for filling up tires, one for your sports equipment, etc.

Source of power supply

Some people consider themselves to be the classic home hobbyist. They have shops in their homes or garage, and a home air compressor can be an essential addition. An air compressor can be used to power tools and equipment, clear off a workspace (not a good idea however), as well as a variety of other applications.

There are gas compressors, as well as electric. Both do the job, but for gas models, you must have adequate ventilation. You want one that has enough tank capacity for your needs, and one that can handle different or multiple tools if necessary. You require looking around for one that is going to fit your needs.

The price of the tool

Price is a necessary factor when it comes to a home air compressor. Air compressors have a wide range of prices. If you are looking for one for emergencies, then good quality products are going to run around fifty dollars, depending on their power and features.

When it comes to bigger models, these can run from a few hundred dollars, to well into the thousands, depending on their size, power source, and features. It is good to do window shopping and compare prices for some different products and pick the one that has all the features you need at a price you can afford.

So by now you should have a pretty good idea of the size of air compressors you’ll need, so head on over to our homepage to read air compressor reviews of the best models on the market.

Thanks for the advice about finding the right size of air compressor based on the features that I would use. While a light would be convenient in an emergency situation, I don’t think it would be necessary for my needs. I’ll stick to a basic model with a lot of power for big projects.

When I was buying one for my home use, I listed all the tools I need to power with a compressor along with the needed PSI. With that, I bought a compressor (electric one) with at least 20% more PSI than what I need.
